Color Suite for Harpsichord, a ballet (1964)

In fall, 1963, I got a job playing for the ballet and modern dance classes at Texas Tech University, in
Lubbock, TX, working closely with Suzanne Aker, a very talented dance teacher and choreographer. Part of
my job was composing short pieces for daily warm up routines. She liked my music and gave me much
encouragement. She also loved the sound of my harpsichord.
Suzanne came up with the idea for the Color Suite, and asked me to compose it for harpsichord. I was
doubtful; I didn’t think the sound of the harpsichord would lend itself to my Twentieth Century style. But I
was encouraged by the publication of my recorder Trio, so I decided to give it a try.
The idea of the Color Suite is classical in its simplicity. First there are three dances --Blue, Yellow, and
Red--the primary colors, each danced by a solo dancer attired in the appropriate color, and waving scarves of
the same color. Next are three dances---Purple, Orange and Green--the secondary colors, each danced by a
trio. Purple is danced by one person clad in purple, plus the blue and red-clad dancers. Orange is danced by a
new dancer in orange, flanked by the yellow and red dancers, and Green features a green-clad dancer, with the
blue and yellow dancers. Last is a Finale choreographed for all six dancers, creating a color wheel.
Musically, the themes are used in a similar manner. Blue, Yellow, and Red each have their own themes; then
the themes from Blue and Red are altered and combined in Purple, the themes in Yellow and Red are
combined in Orange, and the tunes from Blue and Yellow make up Green. All the themes appear in various
guises in the Finale. I used all the compositional tricks I learned in college, such as inversion of themes,
augmentation, and diminution. This was great fun to compose!
In May, 1965, Suzanne choreographed the Color Suite for dancers from her advanced ballet class. It was
performed as part of a Twentieth-century Arts Festival at Texas Tech. In April, 1982, the Color Suite was
staged again at Laredo Community College in Laredo, TX. Suzanne taught the dances to our ballet students,
and it was performed in the Kazen Center. Unfortunately, neither the 1965 Lubbock performance nor the 1982
Laredo one was filmed or videotaped. So I never got to see the ballet, since I was playing the harpsichord
on both occasions. But I remember it received raves from both audiences.

かいつまんで書きますと・・・
ヘイズリックさんが大学でバレエとモダンダンスのために演奏していた頃､同僚の一人（スザンヌさん）がヘイズリックさんにハープシコードの作品を作曲してくれないかと持ち掛けたようです。スザンヌさんは､ヘイズリックさんのハープシコードの演奏がお気に入りだったようです。ヘイズリックさんは迷いましたが､その仕事を引き受けたのですね。
色彩組曲という発想は非常にわかりやすい発想でした。最初の３曲（青黄赤の原色）は､それぞれの色の衣装に身を包んだ一人のダンサーが踊り､続く３曲（紫橙緑の中間色）はそれぞれ３人で踊ります。例えば「紫」の曲では､紫色の衣装をまとったダンサーが､青と赤の衣装の２人のダンサーと踊るようです。そして終曲は６人全員で踊り､色相環（カラー・ホイール）ができます。
音楽も同じです。３つの原色にはそれぞれテーマがあって､２つの色の中間色の曲では､原色の２つのテーマをモチーフにして､大学で学んだ様々なテクニック（音価を引き伸ばしたり､縮めてみたり・・・それって､グレゴリオ聖歌をモチーフにオルガヌムを作曲した中世の作曲技法だよね）を駆使して作曲しているとのことです。こうした技法を使っての作曲は非常に楽しかったと仰っています。
スザンヌさんが提案されたアイディアが非常に古典的であると書いているのは､バッハもモーツァルトも､この手のトリックのような音楽の作曲が大好きだったでしょうからね。私も思うのですが､何か手掛かりがあって､それで作曲のルールを一旦作ってしまうと､意外と筆は進むものなのですね。
そうそう､言葉より､作曲者自身が描いた絵を見て戴くのが早いと思います。
さてこの曲､作曲者には失礼かもしれませんが､ハープシコードよりもリコーダー・アンサンブルの方がお似合いだと思うのです。WIMAにハープシコードでの演奏が収録されていますが､何ともしっくりきません。何故でしょう？
その理由は､調律にあると思うのです。ハープシコードが美しく響くのは､演奏する曲目の調性に合った古典音律を使うからであって､こうした現代曲を演奏するためには､それに相応しい音律はないと思うのです。強いてあげると平均律になるわけですが､これだとハープシコードでは唸りが嫌というほど耳につきます。私は平均律はピアノにだけ許される音律だと思っています。
一方のリコーダー・アンサンブルですが､何とでもなる変幻自在の音律（？）です。(^-^ )
